Neurosciences and Sports Rehabilitation in ACLR: A Narrative Review on Winning Alliance Strategies and Connecting the Dots

The purpose of the second part of the publication is to propose strategies to integrate neurocognitive training elements into traditional rehabilitation after ACL reconstruction (from the 9th week onwards) and to review updated assessment metrics that can better discern an athlete's readiness to return to competition.
A comprehensive rehabilitation framework is proposed that integrates physical and neurocognitive components, with the aim of improving both long-term outcomes and return to sport testing, as well as reducing the risk of re-injury.
Updates to the traditional rehabilitation approach after ACL reconstruction have been introduced, including greater emphasis on neuroplastic, cognitive, and visuomotor capabilities. These elements help prepare athletes for the unpredictable and chaotic nature of the sports environment and may facilitate a more effective return to sport, potentially reducing the risk of new injury.
