Visual, auditory, and somatosensory convergence on cells in superior colliculus results in multisensory integration
Fundamental study on multisensory integration in the superior colliculus. The research demonstrated that individual neurons receive and integrate signals simultaneously from different sensory modalities (visual, auditory, and somatosensory), producing amplified neuronal responses when stimuli are spatially and temporally coherent.
Results
The study established the three key principles of multisensory integration, which still form the basis of audiovisual stimulation therapies: spatial coincidence (stimuli must come from the same area of the perceptual field), temporal coincidence (stimuli must be synchronous), and inverse effectiveness (the amplification of the response is greater the weaker the individual stimuli are — as occurs in areas of the visual field compromised by brain injury).
It constitutes the neuroscientific foundation upon which the AvDesk operating principle rests: coordinated audio-visual stimulation activates the multisensory neurons of the superior colliculus even in compromised cortical areas, promoting functional recovery and neural reorganization in patients with visual field deficits.
