Neurovisual rehabilitation of patients with geographic atrophy secondary to age-related macular degeneration with AvDesk system
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of neurovisual rehabilitation using the AvDesk training system (Linari Medical) in patients with geographic atrophy (GA) due to age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in the eye with better visual acuity.
Protocol
All patients followed a neurovisual rehabilitation protocol with AvDesk, with biweekly sessions for 3 weeks. Before and after treatment, standardized ophthalmic examinations, MAIA microperimeter assessments (BCEA and macular sensitivity), and the NEI-VFQ 25 questionnaire were performed for clinical response.
Results
The mean (SD) best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at baseline was 0.55 (0.28), improving to 0.39 (0.26) LogMAR (p=0.0002) after completing treatment. The overall NEI-VFQ 25 score improved from 55.05 to 62.18 after treatment (p 0.01). The AvDesk training system proved effective for neurovisual rehabilitation in patients with AMD and GA. It produced improvements in BCVA, fixation stability, and quality of life.
